Remastered Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Coming To iOS, Android

Sonic the Hedgehog 2Earlier this year Sega treated owners of a very basic iOS version of Sonic the Hedgehog to a free update that essentially remastered the game and updated it to run on the same engine that powers the stellar iOS port of Sonic CD.  Knuckles and Tails were added as playable characters and other enhancements made playing the 1991 game a new experience all over again.  Next month the company plans to release a similar upgrade to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.  Offered a free update ($2.99 to newcomers), I'd expect this revised edition of the game to sport its own secrets.  An Android version is on the way as well.  Here's TouchArcade with the news:

What's possibly more exciting than the enhancements we know about are those which we don't. The first Sonic The Hedgehog remake was chock full of awesome secrets, and I'm fairly certain we'll see the same from the sequel. I tried out an early build and can confirm that this remaster is just as polished as the first, so I'm more than a little excited to get my hands on it when it launches next month.

I say, bring it on!  I'm not normally a fan of playing platformers with touch-based controls, but Sega's iOS Sonic offerings have won me over.  There's something about Sonic's simple controls that adapt well to the iPhone and I'm looking forward to seeing what the company has done with its 1992 hit.  I bought the existing version of the iOS app months ago when it was on sale for $0.99 in anticipation of this free update, and it's times like these that I'm glad to have a little foresight. Would it be too much to hope for a similar upgrade to Sonic the Hedgehog 3?
