After porting the popular lawn defense game Plants vs Zombies to a glut of platforms, developer PopCap Games is ready to move on to a proper sequel in the eternal war of flora against the undead hordes. The company unveiled a trailer for the upcoming Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time which doesn't show any actual gameplay, but does give a peek at some of the new plants players will have in their arsenals and shows what appears to be the big gimmick in the sequel: time travel. Watch as the ever-bizarre Crazy Dave revs up his Back to the Future-inspired time machine and rockets away into the time vortex. The game is due out in July 2013 as a free-to-play iPhone/iPad exclusive with optional microtransactions (say, did I mention that publisher Electronic Arts bought PopCap between the release of the first PvZ game and this sequel?). Like other freemium games, I'll glady give it a try, but I refuse to pay for consumable power-ups and other items. If I were able to pay a single price to buy the game outright, I'd hand over my money on launch day. Sadly, the microtransaction market is more profitable than selling individual copies of the game itself these days.
