Mirror's Edge Returns As Rebooted Franchise
June 10, 2013
Can you reboot a franchise after just one game? For that matter, can you call a franchise a franchise if there's only one game in it? No matter; Electronic Arts and DICE are bringing back Mirror's Edge as a release for the Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, and PC, but not as a sequel. Instead the developers are rebooting the story, starting fresh with Faith and her world. Here's some of the press release:
Mirror's Edge was first introduced in 2008 and fans quickly elevated the game's heroine "Faith" into a video game icon. Gamers and critics worldwide praised its unique characters, highly stylized world and fresh take on first person action adventure. The new Mirror's Edge reboots the franchise for the next generation with advanced visuals and an all-new origin story for Faith.
I question why Mirror's Edge needs a fresh start unless it's to make the story seem fresh after a five year rest. Perhaps DICE has a better idea on how to present Faith's struggle. Maybe there's concern that today's mainstream gaming audience won't remember the original Mirror's Edge and there's a perceived need to start over again to make the property feel cutting edge. Whatever the reason, it's just great to hear that it's coming back. I had some issues with the original game, but did enjoy Faith and her world and have been eager to see what DICE could do with a second chance. Instead we'll get to see what they can do with a first chance all over again. Like Duke Nukem Forever, the game will be released "when it's done".
