The Internet took note of former Ubisoft artist Benoit Perreault's work on a hypothetical fighting game in the Street Fighter style based on the company's Assassin's Creed franchise this past weekend as a post on NeoGAF caught fire and spread everywhere. Some reports indicate that this idea, Assassin's Creed: Duel, is an official Ubisoft project, but that's not the truth. There's not a real game here. Perreault himself says:
The "Assassin's Creed : Duel" images were only done as fan art. They were not commissioned by Ubisoft, and are not from a real game.
Still, there's some interesting ideas here and I like the overall concept. My only real gripe is that the roster needs work. Sure, Ezio and Altair are there, and I recognize Desmond Miles and Lucy Stillman, but after that all I see are that guy, the other guy, the doctor, another guy, that one woman, and Rayman. Assassin's Creed has some great characters, but they're not all necessarily memorable. I think I'd rather see Ubisoft throw open the gates and create their own portfolio-wide fighting game. Yes, I'd expect the key assassins to be present, but then the development team could include all the trappings and fun elements from franchises such as Rayman, Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Watch Dogs, Rabbids, and Red Steel. There's so much more material to mine across the entire company that it would feel like a waste to only focus on the Creed world.
