You'll Go Ape For Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Replacement
May 19, 2009
Nintendo's revival of the classic boxing title Punch-Out!! for the Wii is out in stores in North America this week, and while plenty of the original game's roster of boxers (such as Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo) are back for an encore, you may wonder who will take the place of the final opponent. Previous Punch-Out!! games cast the frighteningly real Mike Tyson or the fictional Mr. Dream in that role (and nobody remembers Super Punch-Out!!'s Nick Bruiser), but I think you'll find that the new reigning champ is someone familiar...
Donkey Kong! Could that be a little of the old Nintendo magic back in play at last? We haven't seen that kind of sparkle since the release of last year's Wario Land: Shake It!. Yes, featuring Donkey Kong as the final opponent is a bit out of left field, but it works for me and I'm glad to see him here. I especially like how he picks up your character, Little Mac, and runs off with him after winning the fight. I'd imagine that the scene of DK carrying Little Mac to the top of a construction site was left on the cutting room floor.
