IGN has taken a look at the upcoming Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS and has proclaimed its target audience as female casual gamers. What? Say it isn't so! It's a 2D side-scrolling platformer game, and I was raised on 2D side-scrolling platformer games. We haven't had a new 2D side-scrolling platformer game in what feels like forever. Now we do get one, but it's aimed at casual girl gamers.
Though in reality, it shouldn't. Super Princess Peach is about capturing the casual gamer; specifically, the female casual gamer. There are tons of similarities that can be found in [Peach] that resemble Super Mario World, though the entire mechanic is a bit dumbed down (for lack of a more suitable word).
I'm not eager to judge this book by its cover so I'll wait to hear more about the game as its North American release draws closer, but on the surface this is somewhat disappointing. I crave a new quality 2D side-scrolling platformer game that doesn't hold my hand all the way through the game. I know this whole casual gamer thing is Nintendo's aim these days, but I was hoping Peach would be more Super Mario World and less Yoshi Topsy-Turvy. Oh well, there's still New Super Mario Bros. to crave later this year.
