The latest 2D Sonic the Hedgehog title, Sonic Rush, ships next week for the Nintendo DS. To be honest, when I was at E3 this year and came across Sega's booth with Sonic Rush, Sonic Gems Collection, and Shadow the Hedgehog on display, the DS title stole the least of my attention for some reason. It may have something to do with how the Sonic Advance series hadn't really impressed me. I don't know why, but I've never thought that the Sonic Advance titles lived up to the Sega Genesis collection of vintage hedgehog. They really should. After all, the GBA titles feature more detail, more animation, and more speed than the Genesis could ever hope to produce in its golden years. Yet somehow the Genesis games felt more "pure" to me regarding speedy hedgehog action.
AMN recently had the chance to tear into the about-to-be-final version of Sonic Rush and I think I may have been on the verge of overlooking the game. The final version looks and sounds pretty good. I've decided to take a chance on this one, as I've already preordered it from Amazon. I really want a new 2D Sonic title that evokes fond memories of the original games while at the same time bringing new challenges to the table. Hopefully Sonic Rush will be that game. If not then there's always next year's iteration.
