PTB Celebrates 500 Entries
November 10, 2005
Earlier today I posted my five hundredth entry here on Press The Buttons, so it seemed like a good time to pause and reflect on some of my favorite pieces from the first five hundred. In case you're joining PTB midstream, here's a sample of the good stuff you've missed out on (so far).
- When Online Worlds Dry Up (what if they held a MMORPG and nobody played?)
- Micropayments Mean Microfun (the first of PTB's entries to be picked up by Joystiq and other such places)
- Inside the EA/UCF Game School, Phase I and Phase II (my visits to the jointly operated digital media academy in Orlando, FL. I'll have another follow-up to these soon.)
- Why Can't We Have Nice Things? (ever notice how Nintendo's loyalty programs in Japan and Europe offer up better gear than the USA version?)
- New Zelda Details Surface Along With More "Theories" (in which I rail against unsubstantiated gameplay rumors)
- Acquisition: The Art Of Purchasing Used Video Games (some simple advice on raiding the used game store)
- Remembering The Nintendo Comics System (a look at the Nintendo comic books of 1990-91, complete with a few scanned pages)
- Illinois Legislator Claims Video Games Are Not Art (a counterargument to the idea that a video game cannot be artistic)
- What They Don't Tell You About E3 (reflections on the unsaid aspects of the big trade show)
- First Is Not Always Best ("First news report post!")
- Nintendo To Unleash Next Game Boy? (speculation on the next of the Game Boy family. So far it hasn't come true, but I'm patient.)
- Meet The Major Players (in which I defend the right of game journalists to have a personal opinion while at the same time issuing unbiased news reports)
- Growing Up Zelda (the first of my series of personal essays in which I elaborate how game franchises have helped me over the years; don't miss the other pieces on Mega Man, the Game Boy, the Virtual Boy, Super Mario, and Donkey Kong)
- Sony Reaches New Coolness Level (taking console shortages to the next level of absurdity)
- Tracking The Elusive Samus Aran (why is it so hard to buy new Game Boy Advance games off the shelf?)
- Nintendo Revolution Download Service Is Fanboy's Dream (you don't really expect to download Derby Stallion '98 for free, do you?)
- Inside The Video Game Review Process (a step by step account of how to professionally review a video game)
- We're Buddies, You And Me, Right? (how familiar is too familiar in the game journalism industry?)
- Nintendo Kennel Club Sparks Greed, Controversy ("I deserve free games!")
- Mega Man Missing In Action (ever known a developer to lose its own source code?)
- Choosing The Next Censorship Target (did you know that Resident Evil 4 encourages religious persecution?)
- The Best And Worst Box Art (Fester's Quest is still damn creepy)
- If It Breaks, Buy A New One (we're living in a disposable culture)
- Nine Years After Super Mario 64 (how did Nintendo get 3D gaming right on the first try?)
- The Big Bad Boss (Five fearsome game bosses ranked and exposed)
- The Crying Games (when video games lead to manly tears)
- Anti-Game Protesters March, Issue Demands (dismantling the arguments of those who could blame video games for society's problems)
- We Should Have Seen The Revolution Coming (the clues were right in front of us)
- Presenting The Capcom Pad Soldier (exploring a semi-rare Super Famicom controller)
- Who'd Want To Dance Anything Else? (I loves the game music)
- The Many Faces Of Puzzle League (come back, Yoshi!)
- PSP Porn Not Seen By Kids A Danger To Kids (taking scaremongering to the next level)
