Next-Gen Sonic Revealed
September 09, 2005
The latest popular gaming character to get a reboot is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog, and on the next generation of consoles, no less. Sega has announced the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 Sonic the Hedgehog as a reinventing of the character, reaching all the way back to his 1991 Sega Genesis roots. No word on if Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik, Shadow, Amy, Cream, and the other dozen or so characters that Sonic has accumulated over the years will be given a new kick-start as well.
"We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said [Sonic's creator, Yuki] Naka. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."
The first screenshots released certainly show a detailed and slick environment. Sonic himself finally looks like his rendered character artwork. Sonic's "back to the beginning" treatment isn't total, however. The creative team is sticking to the redesigned character model created for Sonic Adventure. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Nintendo Revolution wasn't included in this announcement, but considering how much Yuji Naka has fawned over the console's amazing secret, I wouldn't be surprised if this game or another unique Sonic title lands on Nintendo's plate before too long.
