Nintendo Shuffles Release Dates

Nintendo logoNintendo has published the master list of all of the upcoming game releases for the remainder of this year and a few titles destined for early 2006.  Is your wallet or purse ready to handle these one hundred and seventy games?  Some things have been delayed, others have been moved up, and still others are off the list entirely.  What say we take a look at some of the movers and shakers, hmm?

Game Boy Advance/Game Boy Micro:
Aug. 29: Dynasty Warriors Advance from Nintendo

Nintendo's really pushing this one.  I can't say I'm too excited about it or even very interested in it, but the company has high hopes.  After all, the Game Boy Micro demo units at E3 were loaded with this game.

Aug. 30: Namco Museum 50th Anniversary from Namco
August: Gumby vs. the Astrobots from Namco

Because if there's anything the world needs, it's a video game starring Gumby.

August: Lizzie McGuire 3: Homecoming Havoc from Buena Vista Games
August: Shaman King: Master of Spirits 2 from Konami
Sept. 6: One Piece from Bandai
Sept. 6: Power Rangers: Space Patrol Delta from THQ
Sept. 6: Rebelstar Tactical Command from Namco
Sept. 12: Scooby-Doo! Unmasked from THQ
Sept. 13: Lego Bionicle: Maze of Shadows from THQ
Sept. 19: DK: King of Swing from Nintendo

Finally!  Japan and Europe has been enjoying this stellar game since the beginning of this year.  I hope that Nintendo has used the extra time to add some new levels.  I've played the European version and while it's certainly enjoyable, it wrapped up a little too soon.

Sept. 19: Tak: The Great Juju Challenge from THQ

Oct. 4: Bratz: Rock Angelz from THQ
Oct. 4: everGirl…your way to play! from THQ
Oct. 4: Ford Racing 3 from Destination
Oct. 4: SRS: Street Racing Syndicate from Destination

Better late than never, right?  The GameCube version of this title that was released last year was the first game I officially reviewed for AMN.  Ah, memories...

Oct. 17: Fairly OddParents: Clash with the Anti-World from THQ
Oct. 18: Chicken Shoot 1 from Destination
Oct. 18: Snood 2: On Vacation from Destination

October: Disney's Chicken Little from Buena Vista Games
October: Driv3r from Atari
October: Duel Masters: Shadow of the Code from Atari
October: Gunstar Super Heroes from Sega
October: Mega Man Zero 4 from Capcom

Keep 'em coming, Capcom, now that you've killed off the beloved iteration of your signature character!  Don't mind me.  I'm still bitter.

October: Teen Titans from Majesco
October: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King
from Buena Vista Games

Again, better late than never.

October: Ultimate Puzzle Games from Telegames
October: Zatch Bell! from Bandai
Nov. 1: SeaWorld: Shamu's Big Adventure from Activision

You know that licensing is getting out of hand when companies license individual animals.

Nov. 1: The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer from THQ
Nov. 7: Donkey Kong Country 3 from Nintendo

Been there, done that.

Nov. 8: Chicken Shoot 2 from Destination
Nov. 8: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from Electronic Arts
November: Atomic Betty from Namco
November: Disney's The Proud Family from Buena Vista Games
November: King Kong from Ubisoft
November: Need for Speed: Most Wanted from Electronic Arts
November: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
from Buena Vista Games
November: Totally Spies from Atari
November: Trollz: Hair Affair from Ubisoft
Dec. 5: Dr. Mario / Puzzle League from Nintendo
Dec. 5: Mario Tennis: Power Tour from Nintendo

The GameCube cousin of Mario Tennis is a blast, but the portable RPGized takes on tennis and golf have never really interested me.

Fall: Shrek SuperSlam from Activision
Fall: SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, PANTS! from THQ
Fall: The Sims 2 from Electronic Arts
Fall: Tony Hawk (working title) from Activision
Fall: Winx Club from Konami
Holiday 2005: Backyard Football 2006 from Atari
Q4: Ed, Edd and Eddy: The MisEdventures from Midway

Nintendo GameCube:
Aug. 23: The Incredible Hulk 3: Ultimate Destruction from Vivendi
Aug. 29: Mario Superstar Baseball from Nintendo

I'm scheduled to review these two for AMN.  Hmm... I'll be busy that week.

Aug. 29: WWE Day of Reckoning 2 from THQ

Sept. 30: Cabela's Outdoor Adventures 2006 from Activision
September: Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects from Electronic Arts
September: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Lockdown from Ubisoft
September: Ultimate Spider-Man from Activision

This one landed on my radar when I wrote a preview of the game for AMN.  It looks to be worth trying at least once.

Oct. 3: Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness from Nintendo
Oct. 4: Bratz: Rock Angelz from THQ
Oct. 17: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance from Nintendo
Oct. 18: Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball MAX'D from Activision
Oct. 18: TY 3 - The Tasmanian Tiger from Activision
Oct. 19: SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, PANTS! from THQ
Oct. 24: Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix from Nintendo

While I like the idea of including classic Nintendo tunes in a DDR game, somehow the whole Mario Mix concept seems a little forced.  And I'm one of Mario's greatest fans, too.

Oct. 26: Nicktoons Unite! from THQ
October: Disney's Chicken Little from Buena Vista Games
October: Zatch Bell from Bandai
Nov. 1: Cabela's Dangerous Hunts from Activision
Nov. 1: SeaWorld: Shamu's Big Adventure from Activision

"You'll have a whale of a time!" - SeaWorld Entertainment Guide

Nov. 1: The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer from THQ
Nov. 7: Mario Party 7 from Nintendo

Please, oh please don't make me review this one!  Last year's edition was enough partying for one lifetime.  At least I got a free GameCube microphone out of it.

Nov. 8: American Chopper Full Throttle from Activision
Nov. 8: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from Electronic Arts
November: Karaoke Revolution Party from Konami
November: King Kong from Ubisoft
November: Mega Man X Collection from Capcom

I'm looking forward to this one, but something in the back of my brain tells me I'll be disappointed, as if Capcom just isn't trying hard enough to make this a fun experience.  I'm losing faith in how they handle Mega Man and friends.

November: Need for Speed: Most Wanted from Electronic Arts
November: Pac-Man World 3 from Namco
November: Shadow the Hedgehog from Sega

This one just has to be good.  I need my annual hedgehog fix.

November: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
from Buena Vista Games
November: Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble from Capcom
Dec. 5: Super Mario Strikers from Nintendo

So am I right in assuming that this is Nintendo's big GameCube holiday game this year?  Twilight Princess really did leave a void.  Not that this won't be fun, but when one has their appetite set for Zelda, soccer just doesn't taste as sweet.

Fall: Call of Duty: Big Red One from Activision
Fall: Frogger: Ancient Shadow from Konami

Because when I think of Frogger, I think of approaching darkness in a world of upheaval.

Fall: James Bond: From Russia With Love from Electronic Arts
Fall: Shrek SuperSlam from Activision

Nintendo DS:
Aug. 22: Advance Wars: Dual Strike from Nintendo
Aug. 22: Nintendogs from Nintendo

I'll come back when Nintendo offers Nintenguineapigs, thanks.

Aug. 23: Pac n' Roll from Namco

After playing the demo at E3 and having a blast with Pac-Pix, I'm inclined to pick this one up.

August: Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour from Konami
Sept. 19: Tak: The Great Juju Challenge from THQ
Sept. 26: Trace Memory from Nintendo
September: Lunar Dragon Song from Ubisoft
September: Ultimate Spider-Man from Activision
Oct. 17: Scooby-Doo! Unmasked from THQ
Oct. 24: Metroid Prime Pinball from Nintendo

The last character-based pinball game I liked was Kirby's Pinball Land specifically because it didn't try and pack in excess missions and goals and objectives.  It was just a simple play-for-points game.  Metroid will probably end up in my library just so I can get the free pack-in Rumble Pak.

Oct. 24: Real Time Conflict: Shogun Empires from Namco
October: Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects from Electronic Arts
October: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney from Capcom
October: Texas Hold 'Em from Majesco
October: Trauma Center: Under the Knife from Atlus

It seems so wrong, yet looks so interesting.

"Nothing fishy about this adventure!" - SeaWorld Media Guide

Nov. 7: SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger from THQ
Nov. 9: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from Electronic Arts
Nov. 14: Mario Kart DS from Nintendo

And here we have the reason that I'll finally be upgrading to a broadband connection at home.

Nov. 28: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time from Nintendo

And here we have the reason I won't be using that broadband connection a mere two weeks later.

November: Disney's Kim Possible: Kimmunicator from Buena Vista Games
November: Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 from Atari
November: King Kong from Ubisoft
November: Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team from Capcom

You're killing me here, Capcom!

November: Need for Speed: Most Wanted from Electronic Arts
November: Pac-Man World 3 from Namco
November: SBK: Snowboard Kids DS from Atlus
November: Sonic Rush from Sega

"Needs more killer whales!" - SeaWorld Visitor Guide

November: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
from Buena Vista Games
November: Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble from Capcom
Dec. 5: Animal Crossing from Nintendo
December: Golden Nugget Casino from Majesco
December: Ultimate Card Games from Telegames
Fall: ATV: Quad Frenzy from Majesco
Fall: Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow from Konami

Maybe I played a bad demo unit back at E3, but I never actually was able to fight anything.  After spending fifteen minutes reading dialog without being able to attack a single monster, I moved on to another booth.

Fall: Dig Dug Digging Strike from Namco
Fall: Dragon Booster from Konami
Fall: Frogger: Helmet Chaos from Konami
Fall: Shrek SuperSlam from Activision
Fall: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare from Konami

January: Guilty Gear Dust Strikers from Majesco
Q1 2006: Dynasty Warriors (working title) from Koei
Q1 2006: Metroid Prime Hunters from Nintendo

Bad Nintendo, bad!  This game has slipped down the calendar so many times it isn't even amusing anymore.  First it fell from a June 2005 release down to August, then to October, and now it's dropped into next year.  Here's hoping they're using this extra time to add online multiplayer support, because if not a lot of people are going to be even more disappointed.

After reading the resulting discussion on Slashdot regarding my comments here, let me clarify that I am not urging Nintendo to push games out to stores before they are ready, but instead I want to see the practice of announcing release dates over and over again changed so that my hopes are not continually dashed by sliding schedules.  I understand that games are delayed sometimes, and that's just part of the business.  After the third or fourth release date announcement, however, I start to expect the developer to either withdraw it from the calendar until it's finished and not speak of it again until it's ready or just push the game to stores to meet the arbitrary deadline.  Nintendo does not commonly do the latter and I think we're all happier for that.

Q1 2006: Ultimate Brain Games from Telegames
Early 2006: Nicktoons Unite! from THQ
