Developer Quantic Dream hasn't been at rest since finishing its Sony PlayStation 3 adventure Heavy Rain. At the Sony E3 press conference this evening, the company revealed its next project, Beyond, in which players are cast as a young woman with eerie supernatural powers. Here's the blurb from the PlayStation Blog:
Ever since she was born, Jodie Holmes has always been different from everyone else. She possesses supernatural powers through her psychic link to an invisible entity she calls Aiden, and this gift has changed her life forever.
In BEYOND: Two Souls you will experience the most striking moments of Jodie’s life as your actions and decisions determine her fate. You’ll also be able to take full control of both Jodie and the entity in spectacular action and adventure scenes. And as Jodie traverses the globe, you will face incredible challenges in emotionally charged events never before seen in a video game.
At the conference, a big deal was made regarding the casting of actress Ellen Page as Jodie. Page performs Jodie's voice and provides the motion capture data for the character. After all of the emphasis on Page's casting, a trailer was shown that went on to feature the Jodie character not doing much of anything at all. You'd think that they'd show a segment featuring Jodie in all her walking and talking glory rather than sitting rock still in silence. Still, the concept behind Beyond intrigues me and while I wasn't completely behind Heavy Rain, I'm open to the mechanics behind it and wouldn't mind giving this new title a try. Supernatural mysteries ensnare me all too easily. Beyond is due out next year.
