Go For The Gold In New Super Mario Bros. 2

New Super Mario Bros. 2While Nintendo preps New Super Mario Bros. U for release later this year, the company is also working on another 2D side-scrolling platformer adventure for Mario.  New Super Mario Bros. 2 follows up on 2006's original DS game in a 3DS sequel that sends Mario out to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser yet again, but this time there's a secondary objective.  For some reason, the Mushroom Kingdom is packed with far more coins that usual, and while unquenched greed is traditionally Wario's thing, Mario must collect as many stray coins as possible.  Even the new power-ups such as the golden Fire Flower allow for additional coin-collecting possibilities.  Why all the coins?  Nintendo isn't saying just yet, but I'm up for any excuse to send Mario running through new levels with interesting gimmicks.

Not everything here is new, of course.  These 2D Mario games thrive on nostalgia, so there are plenty of returning elements popping up as well.  The Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3 returns which gives Mario the gift of raccoon-powered flight (complete with P-meter that must be charged before lift-off), and there's a quick moment in the trailer that shows off the Reznor fortress bosses last seen in Super Mario World.  Don't take my word for it; check out the trailer from Nintendo's YouTube channel (or, better yet, see it in 3D on your 3DS by scanning this QR code in the eShop).  New Super Mario Bros. 2 launches August 19 as both a traditional retail purchase and from the 3DS eShop as a digital purchase.
