I've known Kombo's Senior Editorialist Lucas DeWoody for several years, and while he's practically a walking Wikipedia of gaming lore and history, he seems to have recently lost his mind and gone all the way deep into the madness. I say this because despite being a major Super Mario fan, he has yet to tear open and devour the recently released New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I know! It's crazy! He seems to have a good reason for doing so, however, as he explains in his latest editorial over at Kombo.
Yes, I'm a sucker for the holidays, and that's why I haven't played New Super Mario Bros. Wii yet. I had it preordered and paid off on release day, but I haven't played it. It might seem strange. It's not on my Christmas list or anything. Everybody thinks I'm weird for not having played it yet, but this is just normal for me. I've been doing it since 1991. It's a family tradition. On that fateful Christmas of December 1991, my Mom decided to buy me a Super Nintendo Entertainment System since my little sister was going to be born next month and she wanted me to have something to keep me busy since I wouldn't be getting all the attention anymore. I had been playing games since before I could read, but this would be the first console that was mine. No more bumming off the relatives. It was a rather late decision, and there was a global shortage that year. We were fortunate because she drove to 14 different stores and found the last one in a 200 mile radius of our home. That morning I made the "N64 kid" look like Ben Stein in comparison. I'm surprised I didn't break the thing while I ran around the house with it. I've actually still got that box in the attic.
As an adult I do miss the old childhood tradition of unwrapping the season's must-have Nintendo hit each holiday, but then I remember that I can buy my own games and play them as soon as they are released and suddenly it's just not an issue anymore. Funny how that works.
