Whenever someone laments the lost games canceled in the wake of the failure of Nintendo's Virtual Boy, it's usually games such as Virtual Boy Mario Land, G-Zero, and Bound High that send imaginations working overtime. Now some extremely rare screenshots of a Virtual Boy version of the Super NES RPG classic EarthBound have surfaced after all these years and I guarantee you that these images are 100% real, although I should warn you that by "real" I mean "completely fake". Check out what might have been / never actually was over at EarthBound Central.
I made those images after finding a way to hack EarthBound to make Onett look like Moonside, then I just turned everything red. Many laughs were had, but of course there were a number of people who believed it was real, even after the third pic. [J]ust imagine trying to play an entire RPG on the Virtual Boy. People’s heads would explode and the sky would turn red.
As much as I love some of the better games from the Virtual Boy library, I really do not see how a full length RPG of that era could have been a good idea on the ol' red-and-black Viewmaster. My eyes cry out in pain just thinking about playing a game in the red and black zone that is extremely long and requires lots and lots of reading tiny text. On the other hand, had EarthBound actually made it to the Virtual Boy, the consequences of playing the game may have been worth the risks.
