Weekly Poll: Satisfaction

Weekly Poll for 6-09-2008Hmm, there's not as much Solid Snake love out there as I'd thought.  I know these results are from a comparatively tiny sample compared to the overall gaming population, but sometimes I wonder just how successful the major blockbuster titles may actually be.  The four of my non-gaming-industry  co-workers that own Sony PlayStation 3s aren't planning on taking in Metal Gear Solid 4 at all.  Again, it's a small sample size, but it does make me wonder...

Let's talk in general terms this week.  All things considered, are you satisfied with the video game industry?  That's a very open question, so feel free to answer it with whatever criteria you like.  Just be sure to elaborate on your thoughts in a comment below after you cast your vote.

Games have more or less totally lost my interest this generation. It's more of the same stuff that didn't work for me last gen, but more expensive and less tolerable in content. I'm bored to death with combat and I've never cared about "story", and outside of puzzle games, there's really not much else. As a 31 year old guy whose appetite for juvenile power fantasy and competition was already minimal to begin with -- now being a thing of the increasingly distant past -- I find that games have failed to evolve to address my tastes for engaging interactivity and enlightening substance.

I am satisfied but I feel that we still have a few issues that are holding the industry back from evolving to the next step. Namely the way in which games are reviewed and some of our vocaularies.

I covered an example of the review aspect in my latest post. In a nut shell games should be critiqued and not "reviewed", making game reviews more subjective and in line with movies and music. ATM our current review criteria crucifies games that are atypical. This could be a different audience (Wii Fit, Casual games), different graphics (2D, sprites), niche genres (2D fighters, shmps) and other differences.

There is also a myriad of problems with the classification of casual and core gamers but I will go into that another day.
