But It's Much Deeper Than That!

Mario plays tennis A little over a year ago when I was reviewing Mario Power Tennis for AMN my parents asked about which games I was in the process of reviewing, so I explained a little about the game.  It's tennis, after all, so the explanation basically involved volleying the tennis ball back and forth over the net.  "Oh, so it's like Pong then," my mother says, to which I replied "No, because... I mean, there are special moves, and... dammit!"  Way to simplify the experience there, Ma.  I still believe Power Tennis is a solid and entertaining game, but whenever I play it I can't get that quote from my mother out of my head.

Flash forward to this week as I'm explaining a little about the new Mario Tennis: Power Tour to a co-worker.  It's tennis, after all, so the explanation basically involves volleying the tennis ball back and forth over the net.  The co-worker says "Oh, so it's like Pong then."  Something tells me I should stop trying to explain Mario Tennis in all of its forms, as I never like the replies I get back when discussing it.

Naaah, not like pong. You can't bounce the balls of the sides.

Well, this is a simple one. You could simply say "Yes, it's like pong in the same way that tennis is like pong."

No need to be insulted or threatened by it--they're just speaking to their level of understanding, being a non-videogaming public. Help 'em out by helping them to see that, just like how you wouldn't really be giving a fair description of tennis by saying "tennis is like pong," so too would you not be giving a very fair description if that 'tennis' were in video game form.
