There's a whole slew of unlockable characters to be found in Mario Kart DS including some of whom you'd expect to see available, but one of the hidden racers is a complete surprise. R.O.B., the Robotic Operating Buddy, is one of the hidden characters in Mario Kart DS. I was shocked to see him on the list of characters, but it's good to see Nintendo reaching back to its roots and digging up a character that never had a major day in the sun. He's achieved cult popularity, don'tcha know. Aside recently from cameoing in Wario Ware and F-Zero GX (as a background construction robot) the little guy has been long absent from the Nintendo world. Of course, I can't help but wonder if younger gamers new to Nintendo products in the past five years or so will come across R.O.B. and wonder just who the heck he is and what he's doing on the race track. Learn your history, kids, or else you'll be doomed to repeat it and have to play Gyromite. Fairly warned be ye, says I.
