Remember a few months ago when Microsoft recalled a number of Xbox power adaptors because they had a nasty habit of bursting into flames? Sony must use the same manufacturer as Microsoft for PlayStation 2 power adaptors, because now Sony has issued a recall of its own concerning overheating and melting units. This only effects power adaptors included with the slimline PS2 units, however.
Sony said it was taking the precautionary measure of recalling all the affected adaptors in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia. In a statement, the company said that it was likely that some of the adaptors may also have been bought after December 2004. The adaptors were specially designed to be free-standing as a space-saving feature of the slimline models. People who think they may have one of the faulty adaptors are urged to go to www.ps2ac.com for more information.
I knew that slimline PS2s were hot sellers, but this is ridiculous. At least the company is doing the right thing by offering replacements. There's a whole laundry list of product codes and serial numbers that PS2 owners need to match up to find out if the power adaptor is part of the recall, so be sure to read Sony's FAQ on the matter before packing up a box and sending it off to Customer Service Land.
